Animal Tip of the Month Wildlife-Proof Your Home Here are some helpful hints to help keep wild animals where they belong -- in the wild. --KEEP GARBAGE INSIDE until your trash collection day. Make sure your lids are secure. If placing bags out for collection, spraying some ammonia on the outside of the bag; or pouring a little into the bag, will deter animals from digging into bags. --DON’T FEED YOUR PETS OUTISDE. If you must, only leave food out for no more than an hour. Your pet will adjust to eating at that scheduled time, and that time only. Pet food left out continually is an open invitation to wild animals: raccoons, opossums, skunks or insects such as flies, ants or cockroaches. --CHECK YOUR HOME TWICE A YEAR looking for openings in chimneys, roof vents, and under porches. Also clean up leaf piles in gutters and around foundations as these make good nesting places for animals. If possible, branches should be trimmed 6 feet away from your home. Remember, wild animals are opportunistic. A little time now for thought and preparation will prevent conflicts later. |
